Lost Communications 失絡之聲
An-Ting 安婷
Released 25 October 2024
On An-Ting’s extensive travels around the UK, Mongolia, Sichuan, Hong Kong and Taiwan, she took field recordings of birdsong and mixed them with dark experimental electronic music with droning soundscapes and hard beats, creating an album that sonically encapsulates the very essence of nature itself, drifting from peaceful ambience to haunting melancholy through to dark and foreboding.
“There is a light and darkness in nature that civilisation has made us numb to and that we want to explore”
Using a binaural recorder to capture the surrounding sounds of birds, An-Ting has created a completely different expression that opens the seemingly simple, yet complex, languages of the birds, furthering the other-worldly, unique feel of Lost Communications 失絡之聲.
From An-Ting:
“We live with other creatures on earth and are surrounded by all different sounds. Through Lost Communications, I blend the birdsongs with my artistic expression to introduce people to these complex languages and nonhuman voices. I hope this will make us more aware of different life forms on this planet and inspire greater kindness to the earth.”

“After all, this is air music. Sky music. Music for contemplating our winged companions who have given us so much inspiration, reminding us that in our dreams and meditations we all have wings to fly.”
-
“An-Ting Chang is a sound artist, each of the album's seven pieces begins with manipulated birdsong recorded in the UK, Mongolia, Hong Kong, Sichuan and Taiwan, and are augmented by electronics that fly rapidly between dark and light.”

“Multi-disciplinary artist An-Ting 安婷 delves into the frenzied, confusing world of interspecies communication on a record that abstracts our relationship with both birdsong and the brooding electronics she folds them into.”
-
“In the same way Ben Frost used birdsong to highlight man's devastating effects on nature (on his album Broken Spectre) An-Ting draws our attention to the beauty to be found in nature, using birdsong to explore her artistic expression.”
-
“Her latest album, Lost Communications, explores the tension between nature and urbanity through music that echoes the sounds of grasslands, city streets, and dawn choruses.”
-
“The Taiwan-born sound artist's Lost Communication is one of the most wondrous takes on animal sounds: Listening deeply, she is putting birds in the spotlight, propelling their song forward with beats, sweetening their signals with sultry soundscapes.”
From the introduction to an interview about interspecies communication.
-
“Taiwan-born, London-based artist An-Ting 安婷 takes birdsong as her inspiration for a new album, Lost Communications 失絡之聲, exploring where nature and human art meet.”
